134. From Amateur to Pro with Kathryn Baumann

In the latest episode of the On The Rail Podcast, we invite an engaging conversation with Kathryn Baumann, the owner and trainer of County Line Farm in Marengo, Illinois. Kathryn's journey from an amateur rider to a professional trainer is filled with lessons from her family farm, personal challenges, and the pursuit of her passion for horses. Let’s dive deeper into Kathryn's story, exploring her career, challenges, and insights into the world of horse training.

Early Beginnings

Kathryn Baumann was practically born into the world of horses. Growing up in a family deeply involved with equestrian activities, she had an unconventional childhood surrounded by pintos, paints, and an eclectic mix of horse disciplines. Her family farm played a significant role in shaping her early experiences, where she learned the ropes of riding under the guidance of her aunt, uncle, and cousins.

A Passion Ignited

Despite her family's influence, Kathryn initially aspired to become a veterinarian. It wasn't until her chemistry classes that she realized a career in veterinary medicine wasn't for her. Instead, Kathryn pursued a degree in psychology and worked as a probation officer before redirecting her path toward professional horse training.

Stepping into Professional Training

The transition from an amateur rider to a professional trainer was not straightforward. Kathryn's decision to turn professional in 2019 was influenced by changes in her work environment and an organic evolution of her interests toward coaching and showing. Her initial concerns about clientele and establishing a name for herself were quickly dispelled by the passion she found in shaping a training program of her own.

Balancing Challenges and Growth

Kathryn's professional journey was not without its hurdles. From back surgery to pregnancy, each challenge added layers to her growth and development as a trainer. Despite setbacks, her resilience and determination saw her through. Today, her program includes a successful lesson program tailored to riders of all levels, demonstrating her commitment to fostering a new generation of riders.

The Importance of Versatility

Kathryn emphasizes the significance of versatility in her program. At County Line Farm, the focus is not only on competitive showing but also on teaching fundamental horsemanship skills. With a robust lesson program and diverse instructors, Kathryn has created an inclusive environment where riders from all backgrounds can thrive.

Maintaining Personal Health and Well-being

A significant part of Kathryn's story is her commitment to personal health, which she passionately discusses during the interview. Despite initial struggles with physical fitness and health issues, Kathryn found sanctuary in CrossFit. This newfound passion has improved her riding and enhanced her lifestyle, serving as a powerful reminder that physical fitness is vital for personal and professional success.

Looking Ahead

For the future, Kathryn envisions continued growth for County Line Farm. She is committed to nurturing both novice and seasoned riders, aiming to increase participation in local and national shows. Kathryn's story highlights the importance of hard work, perseverance, and a supportive community in achieving success. Her journey serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to turn their passion into a sustainable career.

Kathryn Baumann's journey from amateur rider to professional trainer is a testament to the power of passion, adaptability, and resilience. Through her story, we see the multifaceted world of horse training, reminding us that success is not only about reaching the top but also about the impact we make along the way.
