100. Inside the AQHA World Show: Exciting Updates and Insider Info

Contracts with Megan Rechberg

Hi, everyone! In our latest episode of the On The Rail Podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting about the upcoming AQHA World Show with some of the industry's key figures. We were thrilled to host AQHA CEO Karl Stressman and AQHA Director of Competition, Scott Neuman. They shared extensive details about this year's event, key changes, and what attendees and participants can look forward to. Here's a detailed recap of our conversation.

Introduction and Guest Introductions

Liz kicked off the episode by welcoming Carl and Scott, who introduced themselves with enthusiasm about this year’s AQHA World Show. Carl has been with AQHA for over two years, and Scott for about a year and a half. Together, they provided valuable insights into the inner workings and extensive preparations for the world show.

Overview of the AQHA World Show

The AQHA World Show will be held from November 1st through November 20th at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. The event will feature select amateur, amateur, and open competitions, spread out across the entire duration of the show.

Scheduling and Coordination

Jenna raised a pertinent point about the challenges of scheduling around other significant events like the Quarter Horse Congress. Karl acknowledged the complexity involved, emphasizing the numerous considerations they have to balance, including avoiding overlap with other major events and local logistics at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.

Town Hall Meetings and Feedback Integration

In recent years, AQHA has conducted town hall meetings to gather feedback from members and exhibitors. Karl and Scott shared how these meetings have been instrumental in shaping the show schedule and other aspects of the event. For example, based on feedback, they have made efforts to recruit experts like Chris Darnell, who has significantly contributed to managing the schedule.

Continuous Preparation and Member Involvement

Preparation for the next AQHA World Show often begins even before the current one ends. Scott detailed the year-round efforts that go into planning not only this event but also other major AQHA events. The team takes a short breather after the world show but quickly transitions to planning other significant events.

Facing Challenges and Embracing Transparency

Jenna and Karl discussed the challenges of deciphering valuable feedback from general complaints. Karl emphasized AQHA’s commitment to improving transparency with members and making decisions based on valid, actionable suggestions.

Exciting Additions and Major Changes for This Year

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the AQHA World Show, a milestone that brings additional excitement. Karl and Scott announced several new features, including:

  • Increased Prize Money: An additional financial commitment of $200,000 more than last year.

  • Ranch Horse Classic: A new event similar in format to the Pleasure Versatility Challenge but for ranch horses.

  • Expanded Classes: Splitting and leveling of the increasingly popular ranch trail classes, aiming to accommodate even larger participant numbers.

  • Tribute to Norick Arena: This year will be the last time the show is held in the Norick Arena, adding sentimental value to the event.

Community and Networking Opportunities

Social interaction is a vital aspect of the AQHA World Show. Karl and Scott highlighted the importance of providing social event opportunities where exhibitors and attendees can relax, network, and enjoy their time. Last year's social events were highly appreciated, and they plan to expand these activities this year.

Sponsors and Their Contributions

The AQHA World Show is supported by various sponsors who play a crucial role. Scott mentioned the significant contributions from longstanding sponsors like Justin Boot Company, and others. These partnerships enable the event to offer substantial prize money and high-quality experiences.

Youth World Show Highlights

For the upcoming Youth World Show, the Gold Globe Lounge will have several enhancements, including activities for youth, a coffee bar, and memorable memorabilia displays. The show will also expand jacket offerings and recognize achievements in non-horse competitions such as judging contests.

Practical Information: Entry Deadlines and Fees

Key entry deadlines are crucial for participants:

  • The qualifying period for the World Championship show ends on July 31st.

  • Entry submissions open in late August, with an initial closing date of September 15th.

  • There are different stages for late entries based on the type of class.

Participants can also utilize the buy-in fee if they don't meet the qualifying standards.

Looking Ahead: Future Improvements

Karl and Scott discussed future enhancements, such as the new arena at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds set to open next year and ongoing support for affiliate programs to standardize and improve local shows.

Conclusion

We ended our conversation feeling optimistic about the future of the AQHA World Show and impressed by the dedication and forward-thinking approach of Karl and Scott. Their commitment to improving the event each year is evident, and we’re excited to see these changes come to life.
