On The Rail

099. On The Rail Goes Down Under

Contracts with Megan Rechberg

Hello, and welcome to another episode of our podcast! Today, we have something truly special. Our journey takes us far from the usual circuits as we head "Down Under" to chat with a group of remarkable horsewomen from Australia. Join us as we explore the unique aspects of the equestrian world in Australia through the voices of Shelley, Deanne, Janet, and Lara.

Introducing Our Guests

In this exciting episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with four passionate equestrians from Australia—Shelley Lalor, Deanne Warwick, Janet Mansley, and Lara McEachern. They shared their experiences, insights, and the vibrant life of horse showing on the other side of the world.

Beginnings and Backgrounds

Every equestrian's journey is unique, and our guests are no exception. Shelley started showing horses in 1974 and has been deeply involved ever since, raising daughters who share her love for horses. Deanne Warwick also began riding in the early '70s and now enjoys watching her daughter follow in her hoofprints. Janet offers a different perspective, having started with dressage and show jumping before falling in love with quarter horses in 2007. Lara's story includes a rich tapestry of cutting horses, dressage, and pony club activities. These stories set the stage for understanding not just individual careers but also the cultural and logistical differences in the horse world between Australia and other countries, like the United States.

Horse Showing in Australia

Distances and Logistics

One of the first striking differences in the Australian horse showing scene is the sheer distance involved in participating in events. As opposed to having several shows a short drive away, most Australian riders have to drive long hours—sometimes even days—to get to the nearest event. Despite the distances, the camaraderie and passion for the sport remain strong.

Show Structure and Participation

Unlike some parts of the world where shows might focus on single disciplines, many Australian shows are multi-disciplinary. Equestrians might compete in hunter classes, dressage, trail, and even ranch riding—all within the same show. This versatility is something all our guests cherish, as it allows them to showcase their horses' wide range of skills.

The Rise of Ranch Riding

Ranch riding has seen a significant surge in popularity in Australia. Several guests mentioned how this shift is influencing the local equestrian landscape, offering more opportunities for riders interested in ranch versatility, reining, and similar disciplines.

Youth Involvement

One of the topics our guests discussed passionately is youth involvement in equestrian sports. Australian youth riders often take a very hands-on approach, with most of them keeping their horses at home and participating in a variety of events. However, they face unique challenges—in particular, the small number of youth riders compared to older age groups.

Education and Sports

Balancing education and horse riding can be quite a juggling act, as pointed out by Deanne. The demands of school, combined with the distances traveled for shows, make prioritizing education essential. However, the benefits of being involved in horse sports—from learning responsibility to gaining confidence—are undeniable.

Future Aspirations

Personal Goals

Each guest shared their personal goals for the future. Whether it's getting back into the saddle after a hiatus, focusing more on ranch riding, or supporting their children as they navigate their equestrian careers, the passion remains steadfast.

Growth of the Industry

There was a shared hope among all guests that the Australian equestrian industry will continue to grow and evolve. They pointed out the need for more youth engagement and better support systems to encourage young riders. Furthermore, attracting trainers and clinicians from abroad to conduct workshops and clinics could immensely benefit local riders.

An Open Invitation

One of the most heartwarming parts of the conversation was the open invitation extended by our guests. They encouraged international riders and trainers to visit Australia, promising a warm welcome and an unforgettable experience. Whether it's participating in shows, enjoying the beautiful beaches, or attending unique events like camp drafting, Australia has a lot to offer.

Final Thoughts

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to Shelley, Deanne, Janet, Lara, and Jenna for sharing their incredible stories and insights. Their passion for horses and the equestrian sport is truly inspirational. This episode not only highlights the differences but also the universal love for horses that binds equestrians around the world. If you ever find yourself in Australia or looking for a new equestrian adventure, remember the generous offer from these amazing horsewomen—you'll find more than just a show ring, but a vibrant, welcoming community.
